AJ New Atascadero HS record!
Drill Review:
15’101/2 - Running fast and planting great. He also had a couple of huge jumps at 16’1”
Kate M 11-6
Drill Review:
Jumping at Atascadero HS under perfect conditions, Kate is gripping approximalty 12' on a 13' 145, she weighs approximalty 125. Her mid mark this day was in the vacinity of 31-32 feet. She offers perfect hand pressure and does a nice job swinging although her trail leg could stay straighter, longer. Additionally, her feet could get more past her hands so that she slide up along her top arm in a more vertical fashion. New PR, new Paso Robles school record!!!!
AJ over 15 with ease.
Drill Review:
AJ is vaulting on a 15' 170 gripping around 14'5. His mid was 37', he had a couple of little streach steps after the mid, but boy what a great looking jump. I especially like the way he keeps his feet over his hands as he pulls up along the pole. I also like the way he keeps his chin down at take-off, unlike so many HS vaulters.
RN at 12 ft.
Drill Review:
RN has been vaulting a few weeks and is starting to show some form. Here he is jumping from 6l on a 14' 155 at 12' New PR!

Annie B. Blow-Thru Jump
Drill Review:
The definition of a blow-thru jump is: When the vaulting pole rises past vertical before the vaulter can push-off to clear the cross-bar. A coach or team mate can easily determine this situation by standing to the side of the landing pads and watching to see what the position of the pole is at the moment the vaulter pushes off. In this sample vault, Annie has a very good run and plant - thus causing the pole to move to vertical too fast (this is sometimes called too much pole speed). Since she is not bending the pole too much- she raised her grip three fingers on the next jump which proved to be successful.

Paul Schmitt Huge Blow Thru!
Drill Review:
Paul is jumping from 6 lefts at a recent fall short run practice. Note the very efficient pole plant with complete extension of the bottom arm. He completes a very nice jump but the pole is too small. Note that the pole is almost 24" past vertical as he attempts to push off and finish. Since he is already bending the pole enough, and he has way too much pole speed, he will go to a 5 pound stiffer pole with a slightly higher grip for the next jump.

Kasey Burlingham - Cuesta, PR -16'2"
Drill Review:
Gripping approximately 14'4 on a 15'6 175 from 6 lefts Kasey plants the pole a very well but may be leaning back too much (note head position) as the pole picks him up off the ground. He swings well , and follows with a partially effective right foot to the one o'clock position in order to get back further. The jump is an obvious blow-thru, but he could also work on staying tighter to the pole (keeping his inversion) during the pull up and turning phases.

Alycia W. "soft handed" at 12'6 bungee
Drill Review:
Many vaulter's and coaches seem to think that you must have a straight bottom arm into the bending pole in order to vault efficiently. However in my opinion, the vaulter only needs to offer pressure into the bending pole. This is best done with most beginners by employing a 90 degree bottom arm during the pressure phase. Often times, especially with girls and young boys, too much emphasis on "stiff bottom arm" disturbs the swing up, thus making it impossible for the vaulter to invert. In this video clip, Alycia offers no resistance (pressure) with her bottom arm at all, yet she finishes a jump in pretty good technique at 12'6 bungee. On her better jumps she pressures the pole so that her bottom arm does not collapse beyond a 90 degree angle at her elbow. This allows her to pressure the pole adequately and swing up in proper rhythm so that her feet get to her hands just as the pole begins to unbend.

Silva at 12'6'
Drill Review:
Christine weighs approximately 120 pounds and is jumping on a 13'6 140, gripping 12'6. Her top arm is not quite extended all the way up as the pole strikes the box, she also has a tendency to lean back slightly at T.O. However she does a great job of keeping her chin to her chest so that she does not invert too soon. As a result she completes a very nice jump for a new PR.
